KF’s first investment is an educational scholarship, the Kalai Scholarship, awarded to children from the Binga Region of Zimbabwe who seek to accomplish their ‘A’-level education in a government-subsidized institution. The ‘A’-level is Zimbabwe’s two-year program similar to the 11th and 12th grades of American high schools. We estimate that up to 25 students within the Binga region will qualify for ‘A’-level schooling this coming spring, and we hope to be able to assist all of them.
In an effort to maximize our assistance to the region, our scholarship directs all funds towards tuition and textbook costs, and we do not cover expenses associated with boarding or uniforms. The following details the variables involved in a student’s ‘A’-level education:
Textbooks Textbooks (which are generally produced in England and imported) are by far the most expensive single component of a Kalai student’s education. In order for each student to have his or her own complete set of textbooks, we will create a Kalai library at each of the schools where we sponsor a scholarship winner. Each will house texts that are individually allocated to particular students per year, in order to minimize expenses and maximize the texts’ utility.
Texts cost an average of $240 per student per year.
Boarding and Uniforms Boarding expenses and uniforms (both acquirable at domestic rates) can generally be provided locally with minimal difficulty. Our new scholarship application process requires our students’ parent(s) or guardian(s) to sign the application, ensuring that they understand that no boarding or uniforms will be provided by Kalai.
Tuition Tuition expenses per term at Binga Advanced (3 terms per complete school year): Tuition - $2; General Fee - $1; SDA Levy - $6; and Intect. Levy - $1
These fees, in aggregate, should be considered tuition. They total $10 per student per term, or $30 per student per year.
Summary We hope to provide scholarship assistance to approximately 25 students. We believe we can do so with approximately $4,000. Summary expenses:
- Textbooks - $3,000 (assumes an average of 2 years worth of use per book; facilitated by the establishment of Kalai libraries)
- Boarding and Uniforms - $0
- Tuition - $750
- Miscellaneous expenses - $250 (library upkeep, postage fees, etc.)
